These hippos are pretty nosy, and if you let them in your house you may have to keep explaining what you're doing. Pattern is for hippos about 6" long; the head and body is all one piece, while the legs and tail are added on with separate lengths of yarn.

Each hippo requires less than three-quarters of an ounce (21 g) of worsted weight yarn, an F/5 hook (3.75mm), a small amount of fiberfill (up to a quarter ounce (7g)), and a pair of safety eyes (6mm and 9mm shown). You’ll stitch four legs, then make the head and body in one go, sew on the legs and braid a tail after running yarn through the appropriate spot. The ears and nostrils are made as part of the head.

Patterns for pig and hippo heads for the same body mean you can populate your tiny river or tiny barnyard, or both. Each animal is about 3" long.

This pattern is crocheted in a spiral with one length of yarn, including tail and ears. The bobble-stitch-footed body is the same for both. Each animal requires less than 1/4 oz (7 g) worsted weight yarn and an F/5 hook (3.75mm), a few glass or stone beads or pebbles for balance, and a small quantity of fiberfill.

The animals pictured with moss, rocks, and plants in the background are made with six-stranded embroidery floss and a size 4 steel hook (4mm). They are only about 2 inches long, and one skein of floss (8 m/8.7 yd) makes one animal, with plenty left over. If I did it again I would add a chain to each of the hippo’s ears to make them more prominent.

Stitches and techniques assumed: slip knot, chain, slip stitch, single crochet and decrease, skipping stitches, stitching in front loop or back loop only, half double crochet, double crochet, sewing up openings.

Each leg is a 4-dc bobble stitch, which is explained in the pattern.
